Gophers Through Day One of Minnesota Challenge

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Day one of the 2015 Minnesota Challenge wrapped up this evening in both the east and west pools of the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. With the bulk of Minnesota swimming and diving resting for their respective Big Ten Championships meets later this month, the Gophers had 17 individual races and two relays.
The Gophers went 1-2 in the men's 200 freestyle relay. The relay team of Jimmy Rafter, Noah Busch, Niklas Brinck and Chase Bublitz posted a top time of 1:21.91 for first. Jan Hansen, Bryce Boston, RJ Leiferman and Corey Mills followed with a 1:23.96.
In the women's 500 freestyle, freshmen Theresa Bushman and Mckenna Lynch topped the competition taking first and second respectively. Bushman finished with a time of 5:02.41, followed by Lynch's 5:09.12.
Connor Croan took second in the men's 500 freestyle, finishing with a time of 4:31.06, ten seconds faster than his seeded time. Teammates Garin Marlow (4:31.18) and Jan Hansen (4:34.11) followed for third and fourth.
Five Gophers competed in the men's 200 IM. Senior David Friesch powered his way to a first-place finish with a time of 1:51.45. Freshman Chase Vennefron followed with a 1:52.02. Viktor Bjoerk (1:52.28) and Garrett Larson (1:55.05) took fourth and fifth. Corey Mills placed ninth with a time of 1:58.32.
Freshman Aislin Rose raced breaststroke in the women's 50 freestyle, finishing with a time of 30.83 and finished fourth in her heat.
Rounding off session one of the Minnesota Challenge, six Gophers competed in the men's 50 freestyle. Minnesota claimed the top five spots with senior Jimmy Rafter placed first in the event with a 20.73. Niklas Brinck had a 20.82 for second, with Noah Busch for third with a 20.85. Chase Bublitz (20.93) and Bryce Boston (21.14) finished fourth and fifth respectively. Junior RJ Leiferman finished with a 21.59 for twelfth place.

Both one-meter and three-meter diving events will contested this weekend as well. Women's one-meter and men's three-meter will begin Saturday, Feb. 7 at 9:00 a.m. and women's three-meter and men's one-meter will start later that day at 3:00 p.m.
