Big Ten Meet Rewind
Behind a pair of individual champions in Luca Wieland (heptathlon) and Mitch Hechsel (600 meters), the University of Minnesota men's track & field team finished third at the 2015 Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championship two weeks ago at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

The Gophers totaled 76 team points over the two-day event behind Nebraska's 127 and Illinois with 86.

Wieland closed out the weekend in stellar fashion for the Minnesota men's track & field team, winning the Big Ten heptathlon title and setting a new school record for the event in the process. A sophomore from Berlin, Germany, Wieland totaled 5,787 points to unseat Benjamin Jensen's score of 5,769 for the school record - a performance that had stood for 17 years. The win stands as Minnesota's first conference title in the heptathlon since R.J. McGinnis in 2010.

Wieland led all heptathlon competitors in the shot put with a toss of 14.44 meters (47-04.50 ft.) and the 60-meter hurdles at 8.23. The sophomore also finished second in the high jump at 2.08 meters (6-09.75 ft.), fourth in the 60 meters at 7.08, fourth in the long jump at 6.98 meters (22-11.00 ft.), fifth in the pole vault at 4.60 meters (15-01.00 ft.) and eighth in the 1,000 meters at 2:48.99.The win from Wieland picked up 10 points while Jamie Crum's sixth-place finish in the heptathlon added another three points as the Maroon & Gold.
Meanwhile, Hechsel's winning time of 1:16.26 now stands as the fourth-fastest time ever at the University of Minnesota and the fastest time in the NCAA this year.* The Gophers nabbed 18 points in the event as Hechsel and Nate Roese finished first and second, respectively. Roese clocked a 1:16.47 - good enough for sixth all-time at Minnesota and second fastest in the nation behind only Hechsel.

*The 600 meters is not held at the NCAA indoor meet.

Where Wieland Stands
Wieland's mark of 5,787 stands as the Minnesota all-time record in the heptathlon as well as the best performance in the Big Ten this season. The mark stands as the fifth-best performance in the nation this year behind Georgia's tandem ofGarrett Scantling (6,036) and Maicel Uibo (5,909), Kansas State's Reinis Kregers (5,801) and Buffalo's Mike Morgan (5,797).

Minnesota All-Americans in the Heptathlon
Wieland will attempt to become Minnesota's first All-American in the heptathlon since 2010 and the fifth overall in school history. The Gophers had a trioof All-Americans in the event in 2010 in R.J. McGinnis (sixth, 5,676 points), Jack Szmanda (ninth, 5,601) and Brock Spandl (10th, 5,569) while Travis Brandstatter finished fourth in 2005 with 5,657 points. Brandstatter's fourth-place showing is the highest ever by a Gopher in the heptathlon while McGinnis' 5,676 points are the most points by a Gopher at the NCAA indoor meet.
