Gophers Prevail at Rutgers, 5-2

EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. -- The No. 69-ranked Minnesota women's tennis team got back in the win column with a 5-2 victory against Rutgers at the East Brunswick Racquet Club in East Brunswick, N.J. Friday afternoon. The Gophers improved to 12-6 on the season with a 2-2 Big Ten record.
For the second-straight match, the Maroon and Gold took the doubles competition, this time earning a sweep.
Julia Courter and Jessika Mozia improved to 8-2 on the spring with a tiebreaker win at No. 2. Tereza Brichacova and Paula Rincon-Otero clinched the first point with a win at No. 1 and Mehvish Safdar and Caroline Ryba finished the sweep with a triumph at No. 3. The score at the Nos. 1 and 3 positions was 8-6.
Ryba and Safdar are 8-2 as a duo, including 6-1 in the spring.
In singles, Courter upped Minnesota's advantage to 2-0 with a straight-set win at No. 6. The Scarlet Knights cut their deficit in half with a win and proceeded to knot the score with a victory at No. 1, but the Gophers responded.
Mozia put Minnesota in front, 3-2, after she completed a second-set tiebreak win over Chloe Lee to take the match, 6-2, 7-5 (5). Ryba sealed the win at No. 2 and improved to 11-3 in dual match play with a three-set comeback win at No. 2. Aria Lambert concluded the afternoon with her second triumph of the year at the No. 4 spot.
Lambert, now 14-3 on the season, now has 76-career singles wins, tying her with Alessandra Ferrazzi for the 10th-most in program history.
The Gophers finish the weekend Sunday at No. 53 Maryland before returning to the Baseline Tennis Center next week.
