Gophers to Compete in National Qualifier

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The NCAA Men's Gymnastics Committee announced that No. 6-ranked University of Minnesota men's gymnastics team has been selected as one of twelve programs to compete in the NCAA National Collegiate Men's Gymnastics National Qualifier to be held April 9-11 in Norman, Okla.
The Golden Gophers are the No. 6 seed heading into the preliminary sessions held on April 9. Minnesota is joined by Oklahoma, Stanford, Penn State, Michigan, Illinois, California, Iowa, Ohio State, Air Force, Nebraska and Army. Host Oklahoma holds the No. 1 ranking going into the event.
Minnesota will participate in the first session of competition slated for Thursday, April 9 at 1 p.m. The Maroon and Gold will be joined by Stanford, Penn State, Cal, Air Force and Nebraska. The other session, comprised of four Big Ten conference teams will begin at 7 p.m.
Six of the twelve teams will move on to the second day of competition. Team finals are set to take place on April 10 at 7 p.m. The top three all-around competitors as well as the top three individuals on each event that are not a member of a qualifying team will also advance past the qualifying round.
Senior Ellis Mannon will look to defend his NCAA pommel horse title. The Indianapolis, Ind. native won the Big Ten pommel horse crown last weekend as the Gophers finished fourth at the league championships held in University Park, Pa.
Last season, the squad placed fourth in their qualifying session behind Big Ten foes Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State. Seven individuals advanced to the individual event preliminaries before four Gophers competed for NCAA crowns during the final day of competition.
