Catching Up with Seniors: Lynn Hodnett

We got to talk with senior rower, Lynn Hodnett, about her final spring season...
What are your goals for your final spring season?
My primary goal for my team is to go out and race to the best of our ability every single time, with absolutely no regrets. If another team beats us, then they were definitely faster than us and that's that. I don't have any regrets if I walk away after a race knowing that my boat pulled as fast and as hard as we could, no matter the outcome. It's when a boat starts doubting itself and allowing negative thoughts to run rampant that it cannot perform as well as it could and that's the last thing I want for this season. I guess my other goal for this season is for us to stay positive no matter what the conditions because that's how we're going to be able to show that Minnesota beats the odds against teams that have advantages over us.Â
Can you describe your recent West Coast trip to San Diego?Â
I was so incredibly proud of how we handled our scrimmage against San Diego. They don't have the constraint of water time that we do and so they can just go out on the water without worrying about ice chunks or the water. It's been a while since we've had to handle wakes like the ones we saw in San Diego, but we pulled through them exactly how we should have. We raced with the right mentality; we didn't care that they had a bunch of water time that we didn't. We were aggressive, stayed on rate, and had a fantastic racing attitude. While we obviously still have things to work on in the coming weeks once we're on the water, I think we've been able to keep a great grasp on what we have control over and that's our mental strength.
What are your plans for after you graduate?
I plan on getting a job as a wildlife technician to work on field research projects dealing with mammals during my gap year before applying and attending graduate school. I have yet to decide where I want to attend graduate school though.
What's the biggest item on your bucket list (for life)?
I'd love to travel. Hiking and camping are some of my passions and I would love to explore more of the Earth's natural beauty, both in the United States, and overseas.
What was the funniest or most interesting moment from this year in the rowing program?
That would have to be from back in late October when we road tripped to Madison for a scrimmage against Wisconsin and Indiana. We ended up having all three teams inside doing erg pieces because of the inclement weather conditions. It was extremely windy and the Wisconsin coach judged it to be too unsafe for rowing. We all joke that we only drove to Wisconsin to erg, which is what we spend most of our winter season doing.
