Three crews advanced to Sunday's Grand Finals
INDIANAPOLIS - The Golden Gophers are sending three crews to the Grand Finals after day one of the 2026 Big Ten Rowing Championships Friday. Minnesota and the other 10 conference programs, including five nationally-ranked opponents, raced on the waters of Eagle Creek Park at the Indianapolis Rowing Center in Indianapolis, Ind.
The Maroon and Gold are sending their Fourth Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Four, and Third Varsity Four boats into Sunday morning's Grand Finals as the top three crews in each heat on Friday advanced.
Originally scheduled to begin competition Saturday morning, the opening day was moved up to Friday evening on short notice due to anticipated weather that could create dangerous conditions for the student-athletes Saturday.
Minnesota started the regatta with a third-place effort from the Fourth Varsity Eight crew as it maintained speed through choppy waters. The Third Varsity Eight boat followed and covered the 2,000-meter course in fourth.
Despite getting out to a strong start, the Second Varsity Eight boat could not hold their position and ended the race in fourth place, just three seconds out of a qualifying spot. The First Varsity Eight crew was edged at the finish line by Indiana in a neck-and-neck fight across the entire course. The second through fourth positions all closed the race within three and a half seconds of each other.
The second half of the regatta began with Minnesota in the First Varsity Four class where the Gophers finished in fifth.
Finding itself half a second behind Wisconsin at the 1,000-meter mark, the Second Varsity Four crew put together an impressive effort down the stretch. The Maroon and Gold powered past their rivals and claimed the final qualifying spot. The Third Varsity Four boat capped the evening behind a third-place finish as they caught the Badgers in the last strokes, erasing a multi-seat deficit over the final 500 meters.
The exciting final two races showcased the Gophers' sprinting abilities as they placed ahead of Wisconsin in each race by 1.5 and 1.4 seconds, respectively. The effort of those two boats advanced each into the Grand Finals set for Sunday morning at 8 a.m. (CT).
