Mendez won his award for a stellar freshman campaign in 2013-14. He captured co-medalist honors at the Big Ten Championships and finished ninth at the NCAA Raleigh Regional. Mendez won two other tournaments and was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year, a Freshman All-American and a PING All-Region player. His season stroke average of 71.97 rates third in program history.
The team, under Carlson's guidance, won its first Big Ten title since 2007 and appeared in its first NCAA Regional since 2009. The Gophers won four tournaments over the course of the season. Carlson was named Big Ten Coach of the Year.
