Gophers Claim 10 Titles at Tom Cat

SAINT PAUL, Minn. (Gophersports.com) -- The University of Minnesota men's track & field program captured 10 titles at the Tom Cat Twilight on Thursday evening at St. Thomas' O'Shaughnessy Stadium.
The Gophers posted the top-four finishes in the 100 meters and five competitors in the top-10 including Brad Neumann's winning time of 10.55 -- a new personal record. Gemechu Godi also hit a new personal record to finish second at 10.82, followed by Quinton Coleman in third at 10.93 and Ben Holcomb in fourth at 11.39. Jamie Crum finished eighth at 11.51. Godi added a win in the 200 meters at 21.54 ahead of Nate Roese in second at 22.11.
Minnesota put three runners in the top 10 of the 800 meters including Mitch Hechsel's winning time of 1:49.65 -- a new personal record and an O'Shaughnessy Stadium record. Matt Rosen finished third as an unattached competitor at 1:53.82 while Tony Joyer came in ninth at 1:57.43.
The Maroon & Gold also had three runners in the top 10 of the 1,500 meters with Eric Colvin and Cole O'Brien finishing first and second at 3:55.56 and 3:56.67, respectively. Riley Macon finished sixth at 4:02.04.
Meanwhile, Ben Holcomb won the 110-meter hurdles at 14.95 while Jamie Crum finished third at 15.62 and Danny Schiller took home the high jump title, edging Nick Bachinski with both Gophers hitting 2.02 meters (6-07.50 ft.)
Gophers alum Jack Szmanda paced the pole vault competition at 4.90 meters (16-00.75 ft.) with Tyler Tappe and Logan Markuson tying for second at 4.60 meters (15-01.00 ft.). Holcomb finished fifth at 4.15 meters (13-07.25 ft.). Jordan Charles won the triple jump at 14.10 meters (46-03.25 ft.).
Meanwhile back on the University of Minnesota campus where the discus competition was held, the Gophers claimed the top five finishes with unattached Sam Elsner winning at 54.51 meters (178-10 ft.) followed by Luke Johnson (53.66 meters, 176-00 ft.), Justin Barber (52.11 meters, 170-11 ft.), Mark Jennings (51.68 meters, 169-07 ft.) and Bryan Bjerk (48.17 meters, 158-00 ft.).
Finally, the 4x100 meter relay team of Coleman, Neumann, Godi and Charles won the event with a time of 41.34.
Crum also finished second in the long jump at 6.45 meters (21-02.00 ft.) while Travis James came in fifth as an unattached competitor at 6.29 meters (20-07.75 ft.).
Meanwhile, Minnesota's distance crew opened competition at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., with Aaron Bartnik clocking a 9:06.53 to finish 11th in his 3,000 meter steeplechase section.
