Gophers' Tournament Run Comes to End

EVANSTON, Ill. -- The 54th-ranked and eighth-seeded Minnesota women's tennis team had its stay at the Big Ten Tournament come to an end Friday with a 4-0 quarterfinal loss to No. 12-ranked and top-seeded Michigan in Evanston, Ill. Michigan, which will play in the semifinal round Saturday, ran its win streak to 16 matches.
The Gophers fell to 17-10 on the season with the loss. They matched their highest win total overall and in the conference (six) since 2003.
The Wolverines started quickly in doubles and never looked back Mira Ruder-Hook and Sara Remynse won the final seven games at the No. 3 position to win 8-1 before 19th-ranked Emina Bektas and Alex Najarian sealed the first point with a win at the top spot.
In singles No. 28 Emina Bektas made it 2-0 with a straight-set win at No. 1. Michigan closed out the contest with wins at Nos. 4 by 117th-ranked Sarah Lee and No. 3 by Alex Najarian. Jessika Mozia took Najarian to a second-set tiebreaker, but was unable to force a decisive third set.
Gophers Caroline Ryba (No. 2), Julia Courter (No. 5) and Paula Rincon-Otero (No. 6) saw their singles matches go unfinished. Ryba had forced a third set with 33rd-ranked Ronit Yurovsky with a 6-2 win in the second set and Rincon-Otero was ahead by a 5-3 score in her second set after falling 6-4 in her first set.
