Gophers, Mendez Tied for Fifth after 54

2014 co-medalist Jose Mendez again finds himself in contention for a top-five finish at the Big Ten Men's Golf Championships. He is tied for fifth through 54 holes at Victoria National Golf Club in Newburgh, Ind. Minnesota is tied for fifth as a team at 18-over.
Mendez came into the day at even par, finished the suspended second round even and carded a 2-under 70 in the third round. The sophomore made four birdies and two bogeys in the third round. Mendez is in a three-way tie for fifth and is six shots behind leader Nick Hardy of Illinois.
Freshman Riley Johnson is tied for 11th after a 71 in the third round. He is 2-over on the tournament after making four birdies to three bogeys in Saturday's full round.
Junior Jon DuToit and freshman Rúnar Arnórsson each shot a 75 in the third. DuToit (+10) is tied for 38th and Arnórsson (+11) for 41st. Freshman Charlie Duensing shot a 76 in the third round and is in 49th.
The Gophers' third-round score of 291 (+3) was their best yet in the tournament. Minnesota is tied with Purdue for fifth. Illinois leads the way at 19-under.
The fourth and final round begins at 8 a.m. on Sunday.
