Gophers Tie for Third at B1G Championship

For the third straight year under head coach John Carlson, the University of Minnesota men's golf team finished in the top three at the Big Ten Championships. The Golden Gophers tied for third place at the tournament in Newburgh, Ind. Sophomore Jose Mendez tied for fifth individually.
On the final day of competition at Victoria National, Minnesota moved up from a tie for fifth. The Gophers tied Penn State for third at 29-over, finishing behind champion Illinois (-14) and second-place Iowa (+18).
Mendez shot a 2-over 74 to finish the tournament with an even-par score of 288 over four rounds. He finished four strokes out of the lead. The co-medalists were Iowa's Carson Schaake and Illinois' Nick Hardy.
Mendez earned a spot on the All-Championships Team for the second year in a row after tying for first last year. He turned in scores of 72, 72, 70 and 74 over the weekend. He
In his first Big Ten Championships appearance, Riley Johnson joined Mendez in the top 20. He tied for 18th (+8) despite shooting his highest score, a 78, on Sunday. On Saturday, Johnson had one of the Gophers' two under-par rounds of the weekend.
Junior Jon DuToit had Minnesota's best score of the day with a 72. He tied for 23rd at 10-over.
A pair of freshmen rounded out the lineup, with RĆĀŗnar Arnórsson finishing 36th (+14) and Charlie Duensing tying for 51st (+21). Arnórsson shot his third 75 of the tournament on Sunday, while Duensing shot a 79.
