Jose Mendez turned in an even-par 72 on the first day of the NCAA Regional in Bremerton, Wash. The Gophers sophomore is tied for 22nd at Gold Mountain Golf Club's Olympic Course.
Mendez was 3-over on the front nine, then made four birdies to one bogey on the back nine. He birdied three of his last five holes, including the par-4 18th to cap off his round.
UAB is currently leading the team competition with an 8-under combined score. USC's Sean Crocker leads all individuals after carding a 66 (-6) on Thursday.
The second round of NCAA Regional play tees off Friday morning. The top individual not on one of the five advancing teams will advance to the NCAA Championships. If Mendez were to advance, he would be the first Gopher at the NCAA Championships since the 2007 team qualified.
