LA JOLLA, Calif. -- The Minnesota women's track & field team wrapped up a busy weekend with five top-three finishes and 12 career-best marks, including six all-time top-10 performances, at the Triton Invitational hosted by UC San Diego on Saturday.
Day two at the Triton Invitational included the Gophers' first-place 4x400-meter relay team of Jessica Waldvogel, Emerald Egwim, Erin Hawkins and Titania Markland. Minnesota defended its Triton Invitational title from a year ago with a winning time of 3:39.17 in a steady drizzle and a 15-20 mph cross-wind.
Minnesota received runner-up showings from Kailee Kamps, who used a season-best throw of 14.93m to take second in the shot put, and Erin Hawkins, who ran 24.33 for second place in the 200m.
The Gophers' 4x100m relay team of Egwim, Emma Spagnola, Waldvogel and Hawkins also placed second in a season-best 45.48 seconds to rank ninth in program history. Spagnola finished third in the 400m hurdles in 60.49.
Minnesota's 12 career-best marks included eight performances in the throwing events. Seven of those eight marks came in the hammer and the discus on Friday, and Agnes Esser added an outdoor personal best of 14.20m for seventh place in the shot put in Saturday.
Although shy of her career-best mark, Nicolle Murphy used a season-best throw in the javelin to place fifth and lead the collegiate competitors. Her mark of 49.39m ranks second in the Big Ten and 10th in the NCAA West Region so far this season.
In the pole vault, Cami Gilson and Katie Murgic tied for fourth at the meet, clearing 4.03m. The jump marked an outdoor career best for Gilson and moved her into seventh in program history. Fellow pole vaulter Allie Funk recorded a personal best mark of 3.55m to tie for fourth in the open section of the pole vault as well.
Heta Tuuri also picked up a career best with a jump of 1.73m in the high jump. She placed fifth at the meet and moved into a tie for eighth among all-time Gopher high jumpers.
The Gophers' lone individual career best on the track came in the 400m. Waldvogel took 10th in a career-best 54.93 to rank ninth in Minnesota's all-time list. Egwim led the Gophers in sixth at 54.53, Markland clocked a 54.95 for 11th, and Kat Keller placed 17th (57.27).
Minnesota also competed at the Drake Relays and Macalester College's Janis Rider Invitational this weekend. Kaila Urick, Liz Berkholtz and Lauren Domski led the Gophers at the Drake Relays, and the team picked up 10 top-10 finishes at Macalester.
