DES MOINES, Iowa (Gophersports.com) -- The University of Minnesota men's track & field program closed out the 2015 Drake Relays with a pair of top-five relay finishes on Saturday in the sprint medley relay and the distance medley relay.
On a cold and drizzly day at Drake Stadium, Minnesota clocked its fastest distance medley relay time since setting the school record (and winning its second-straight title) at the 2012 Drake Relays. The relay team of Christian Skaret, Goaner Deng, Mitch Hechsel and Blayne Dulian combined for a 9:46.09 to finish fourth in the event this year.
The Gophers opened the day with a fifth-place showing in the sprint medley relay as Gemechu Godi, Nate Roese, Mitch Hechsel and Bradley Johnson combined for a 3:23.47. The Maroon & Gold finished second in their heat for the race -- coming in behind Loyola by less than a second.
In the individual events, Rashawn Fountain ran 53.25 -- his best time of the season -- to finish 14th in the 400-meter hurdles while Wayde Hall finished seventh in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:56.26.
Minnesota totaled six top-10 finishes at the 2015 Drake Relays highlighted by Luca Wieland's runner-up finish with 7,528 points in the decathlon on Thursday. Jamie Crum finished ninth in the decathlon, and Jeffrey Cottrell finished 10th in the 800 meters while the 4x1,600 meter relay team of Hall, Aaron Bartnik, Skaret and Dulian finished sixth.
Minnesota continues competition on Saturday at the Triton Invitational in San Diego and the Drake Alternative meet at Gustavus Adolphus.
