MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota women's track & field team is set to compete at three meets this week, beginning with the Tommie Twilight at St. Thomas on Wednesday. The team then splits for the Meet of the Un-Saintly at Hamline Friday and Saturday, and the rest of the team will be in Iowa City, Iowa for the Musco Twilight on Saturday.
About the Tommie Twilight
The University of St. Thomas will host the annual Tommie Twilight this Wednesday at O'Shaughnessy Stadium. Events are set to begin at 4 p.m.
About the Hamline Meet of the Un-Saintly
Hamline University is set to host the Meet on the Un-Saintly at Klas Field in St. Paul this weekend. Events are set to begin at 3 p.m. with the hammer throw Friday, and at 11 a.m. on Saturday with throwing and running events.
About the Musco Twilight
Iowa will host the annual Musco Twilight this Saturday at the Cretzmeyer Track & Field Complex in Iowa City, Iowa. Throwing events are set to begin at 1:30 p.m. and running events will begin at 3 p.m. The Gophers will face competition from Iowa, Iowa State, Nebraska, UNI and Wisconsin.
Last Time Out: Drake, UC San Diego and Macalaster
At the Drake Relays, six Gophers recorded career-best times: Lauren Domski (2:08.00 in the 800m), Liz Berkholtz (16:26.17 in the 5,000m), Becca Dyson (16:35.98 in the 5,000m), Megan Bailey (37:30.28 in the 10,000m), Kaila Urick (10:19.48 in the 3,000m steeplechase) and Kate Bucknam (10:47.67 in the 3,000m steeplechase). Minnesota finished the meet with five program top-10 marks as well.
Action at the Triton Invitational included five top-three finishes and 12 career-best marks, including six all-time top-10 performances, for the Gophers. The 4x400-meter relay team of Jessica Waldvogel, Emerald Egwim, Erin Hawkins and Titania Markland took home the event title, and Minnesota received runner-up showings from Kailee Kamps, who used a season-best throw of 14.93m to take second in the shot put, and Erin Hawkins, who ran 24.33 for second place in the 200m.
At the Macalaster Invite, Minnesota claimed four of the top 10 places in the 800-meter run led by Andie Zeman in third place in 2:18.17. In total, the Gophers finished the meet with 10 top-10 finishes.
Gophers vs. the Big Ten
Jess Herauf leads the Big Ten and ranks seventh in the NCAA in the heptathlon after her Minnesota program-record performance of 5,912 points at the Virginia Challenge. She also ranks third in the conference in the javelin at 47.57m. Fellow Gophers Alex Beckman (third, 5,062), Amanda Beckman (fourth, 4,879) and Audra Winter (fifth, 4,812) are also among the Big Ten's best in the heptathlon.
Devin Stanford is second in the Big Ten in the hammer throw with a mark of 61.76m, and she ranks fourth in the discus (54.24m). Nicolle Murphy ranks second in the javelin (49.39m). Several other Gopher throwers land among the league's top 10: Agnes Esser (discus, third, 54.35m), Lyndsey Thorpe (hammer, 57.69m, sixth), Ke-ke Burks (discus, seventh, 51.12m) and Rachel Melum (javelin, seventh, 44.90m). Katie Murgic is fifth in the pole vault at 4.10m as well.
On the track, Kaila Urick is fourth in the 3,000m steeple chase (10:19.48). Erin Hawkins ranks sixth in the 100m (11.67) and 10th in the 200m (23.93). Two Gophers are among the B1G's top 10 400m runners in Titania Markland (fourth, 53.71) and Emerald Egwim (seventh, 54.18). Emma Spagnola ranks sixth in the 400m hurdles (1:00.31) and eighth in the 100m hurdles (13.66).
Minnesota's 4x100m relay team of Egwim, Markland, Jessica Waldvogel and Hawkins ranks fifth at 45.47, and the same four Gophers combine to make up the Big Ten's seventh-ranked 4x400m relay team at 3:38.95.
USTFCCCA National Rankings Update
A new group of teams makes up the top five U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) outdoor track & field rankings this week, as No. 1 USC takes the top spot from Texas A&M, who falls to No. 9. Making up the rest of the top five is No. 2 Arkansas, No. 3 Florida, No. 4 Kentucky and No. 5 Georgia.
Representing the Big Ten in the top 25 is No. 13 Michigan State, who climbed one spot from last week, and No. 25 Michigan, who returns to the top 25 after being unranked last week. Minnesota is No. 52 on the list and is now fourth in the region, climbing two spots from last week.
Program Records Fall
The Gophers have broken six Minnesota program records this season. The indoor season saw records fall in the 200m (Erin Hawkins, 24.03), 60m hurdles (Kimberly Golding, 8.34), high jump (Heta Tuuri, 1.80m) and pentathlon (Jess Herauf, 4,372 points). Outdoor, the team has broken the hammer throw record (Devin Stanford, 61.76m) and the heptathlon record (Jess Herauf, 5,912 points).
Big Ten Championships On the Horizon
Michigan State will host the 2015 Big Ten Men's & Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Ralph Young Field in East Lansing, Mich., on May 15-17.
Up Next: UW-La Crosse Eagle Open
The Golden Gophers will travel to La Crosse, Wis. next Friday, May 8 for the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Eagle Open. Most of the team will rest in preparation for the Big Ten Championship the following week.
