Gopher Rowing Qualifies Six Boats for B1G Finals

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The University of Minnesota women's rowing team qualified six boats for the Grand Finals of the 2015 Big Ten Rowing Championships on the opening day of competition Saturday afternoon at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis, Ind.
The Gophers' First Varsity Eight boat was the first to qualify for Sunday's Grand Final when it finished third in its heat with a time of 7:00.469. The squad, who is receiving 20 votes in the latest CRCA/USRowing Coaches Poll, overcame a slow start to notch the fastest split in the second 500 meters of the race with a time of 1:39.883. No. 1 Ohio State won the heat in 6:40.174 and No. 12 Michigan followed in second in 6:58.021.
Also finishing third in its heat to advance to tomorrow's Grand Final was Minnesota's Second Varsity Eight boat. The Gophers clocked a time of 7:11.474 to finish ahead of fourth-place Rutgers. The Buckeyes and Wolverines placed one-two with times of 6:49.889 and 6:59.130, respectively.
The Maroon and Gold's top Varsity Four boat posted a time of 8:16.671 in its heat, also finishing ahead of the Scarlet Knights, to secure a place in its Grand Final tomorrow, while the First Novice Eight boat finished fourth to compete in the Petite Final.
The Second Varsity Four, Third Varsity Four and Second Novice Eight boats will have one shot at winning a title Sunday morning, as the events will compete in a Finals-only race format.
Finals action gets underway tomorrow at 6:30 a.m. CT with the 1V8 Petite Final, while the Gophers' first event is set to begin at 6:40 a.m. with the 1V8 Grand Final. Full schedule is included below:
