MINNEAPOLIS -- Liz Berkholtz and Jess Herauf have been recognized for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom on Friday as the 2014-15 Capital One Academic All-District Track & Field Teams were announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Berkholtz and Herauf were named to this year's Capital One Academic All-District Track & Field/Cross Country Team with the University of Minnesota now boasting 20 total Academic All-District honorees this year. The two honorees are now eligible for Academic All-America accolades in June and will look to join Maxx Williams (football) as 2014-15 Capital One Academic All-Americans for the Gophers.
Berkholtz, a redshirt junior from Sun Prairie, Wis., led the Gophers during the 2015 cross country season as an All-Midwest Region honoree and the team's top finisher at both the Big Ten and NCAA Championships. She ran her career-best 6K time at the 2015 NCAA Midwest Regional, clocking a 20:16.9 for sixth place. During the 2015 season, Berkholtz ran the fifth, 19th and 23rd best 6K times in program history.
The three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree has a 3.62 GPA in psychology. Berkholtz has also received USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors. On the track, Berkholtz ranks among Minnesota's all-time top 10 performers in three events, ranked fifth in the indoor 5,000m (16:26.48), ranked seventh in the outdoor 5,000m (16:26.17), and ranked sixth in the 10,000m (34:12.67). A three-time NCAA West Prelim qualifier, Berkholtz will represent the Gophers at the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Preliminary Championship in the 5,000m May 28-30, in Austin, Texas.
Herauf, a redshirt junior from Dickinson, N.D., is a 2015 First Team All-American after placing fifth in the pentathlon at the 2015 NCAA Championship. The Minnesota program record-holder in both the pentathlon (4,372 points) and heptathlon (6,014 points), Herauf won Big Ten titles in both events this season after finishing as B1G runner-up in each event a year ago. She ranks among Minnesota's all-time top-10 performers in eight events, including owning both multi-event program records.
The elementary education major has a 3.47 GPA and is an Academic All-Big Ten and USTFCCCA Academic Team honoree as well. After competing in the pentathlon at the national indoor meet and earning All-American honors the last two indoor seasons, Herauf will make her NCAA outdoor debut in the heptathlon at the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships June 10-13.
