ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Minnesota softball sophomore Sara Groenewegen was named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week for the fifth time this season, the conference announced Monday. The honor was the ninth weekly league plaudit awarded to a Gopher this season.
Groenewegen led the Gophers to a 5-0 week by going 3-0 in the circle.
The reigning Big Ten Pitcher of the Year tossed three complete-game wins and recorded 47 strikeouts in 22 innings of work, finishing with a 0.95 ERA. The White Rock, B.C. native struck out 13 in a complete game win over Wisconsin, tied a career-high with 15 strikeouts in a shutout of Purdue and then broke a school by fanning 19 batters in a second win over the Boilermakers the following day.
On the year, Groenewegen is now 28-4 with a 1.52 ERA and 332 strikeouts. Her win total and strikeout total both rank her second in a single season in school history.
Also contributing at the plate, Groenewegen reached base in all five games and had a 4-for-4 performance against Wisconsin that included two home runs. She finished the week with a 1.000 slugging percentage and .611 on-base percentage and had two multi-hit games.
Minnesota will resume action at the Big Ten Tournament in Columbus, Ohio this week. The defending champion Gophers will be the tournament's second seed and will receive a bye in the first round. They will play either No. 7 seed Rutgers or 10th-seeded Iowa in the quarterfinal round at 7 p.m. CT Friday on the Big Ten Network.
