Seven Gophers Compete at University Nationals

Seven Gophers competed among a field of hundreds of college-age competitors at University Nationals this past weekend, an annual competition held in Akron, Ohio. All seven U of M wrestlers competed in freestyle, with three advancing to the quarterfinals at their respective weights. Skyler Petry and Brett Pfarr highlighted the group's performance by placing at 57 kilograms (seventh) and 80 kilograms (sixth), respectively.
For Petry, placing at University Nationals built on a solid showing earlier this spring at the Junior National Championships-UWW Age Group, an event at which Petry won a pair of matches but did not finish among the top eight. Petry looked strong in his four victories over the weekend, taking each of those matches by technical fall and allowing his opponents only two combined points. While dominant in his victories, Petry was also competitive in defeat, with those matches decided by mostly narrow margins, including a two-point loss in the quarterfinals.
In his first major freestyle tournament action this summer, Pfarr returned to the mat after finishing his season at the 2015 NCAA Championships. Like Petry, Pfarr looked convincing in his wins (three technical falls and a pin) while competing hard in defeat (all losses by decision). He opened his tournament run in Akron with a fall before adding a technical fall and an 8-2 decision to reach the quarterfinals. After a narrow defeat to Sammy Brooks, Pfarr added two more technical falls to guarantee himself a medal position, ultimately finishing sixth.
In addition to Petry and Pfarr, Brad Dolezal (70 kg) also reached the quarterfinals. Dolezal's path to the quarters included an impressive 17-7 technical fall over Lavion Mayes in the second round of the tournament. Mayes was an All-American at 141 pounds for Missouri this past season.
Brandon Krone (74 kg), Jordon Rothers (80 kg), Nick Wanzek (80 kg) and Broc Berge (97 kg) also took the mat in Akron this past weekend. Rothers opened the tournament with a pair of technical falls and an exciting 15-12 victory to reach the fourth round, but medically forfeited his remaining matches.
