MINNEAPOLIS - The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) announced Tuesday that Rebecca Braak and Lynn Hodnett were named to the 2015 Division I All-Region 4 First Team and Second Team, respectively, while five Golden Gophers were also named CRCA National Scholar Athletes.
Braak is the seventh Gopher all-time to garner a spot on the all-region first team and the first since current assistant coach Cassie Drozynski earned the distinction in 2013. Jenny Barnes was a three-time honoree (2006, 2007, 2008) and Cheryl Wick (2005, 2007) was named to the first team twice. Melissa Roche was the first Minnesota rower to be named to the team in 2002.
In order to be selected to an all-region team, student-athletes are evaluated on the strength of their team's regional finish, coaches' recommendations and 2,000-meter erg scores. Nominees must be eligible student-athletes who have competed in their teams' varsity boat in 75 percent of races this season.
The CRCA also named its list of National Scholar Athletes, with Kylie Anderson, Anna Cruse, Jessica Flakne, Lauren Gonsalves and Lauren Miller each earning the distinction for the first time in their careers.
In order to become a CRCA Scholar Athlete, rowers must meet the following criteria: meet all eligibility rules as defined by her institution, in her second, third or fourth year of eligibility, rowed in her institution's NCAA or IRA eligible boat(s) for a minimum of 75 percent of the current spring races or raced in a regional conference event and had a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher for her career (through the fall semester/quarter for the current competition year).
