This week we welcome incoming freshman and New York native Nicole Ciavarella to the Gophers. Ciavarella is a breaststroke swimmer that will join the University of Minnesota from Nyack High School and Phoenix Aquatic Club. Her favorite races include the 200-yard breaststroke and 400-yard IM. Learn more about Ciavarella in this Q&A:
Why did you choose the University of Minnesota?
When I began to speak with Kelly Kremer and Ryan Purdy on the phone I knew that I wanted them to be my coaches! I remember answering the phone on July 1st, and knowing after my phone conversation that I could see myself at the University of Minnesota. The coaches are extremely invested in the team and the U has a great engineering program, which is what I plan on studying. It was a perfect fit!
What are you looking forward to the most with starting your collegiate career as a Golden Gopher?
I am looking very forward to getting new and exciting training from coaches that I believe in enormously. It will be good to have a new set of eyes on my stroke and learn from my coaches. I can also learn from the swimmers around me. Having new competition in practice and learning from my peers will allow me to progress in the pool.
Thus far, what has been your best or most proud swimming memory?
When I was 13 years old I qualified for Junior Nationals in the 200-meter breaststroke. I remember being so proud of myself afterwards and I could barely believe I had even qualified. After that meet, I experienced a rough patch in my swimming and began to plateau for a bit. It was difficult for me and I remember leaving many championship meets being disappointed with my swimming. I think my proudest moment in swimming could be learning to not allow my failures to define me as a swimmer. I learned the importance of not giving up and loving the sport even when I do not feel I am progressing.
What do you like to do for fun outside of the pool?
I enjoy running and biking! I like going outdoors and becoming involved in things around me. I also like art and cooking!
How do you think you will contribute to the Gopher swimming and diving program?
I think I can bring a positive mindset to the team that will hopefully motivate and influence my teammates. I know that training will be difficult and I think that having a good attitude is key. Maintaining this attitude every day at practice is important and I want to bring this attitude to everyone around me!
I am so excited to be a part of the Gopher family!
