Diver Mariam Khamis is set to compete for the Gophers this fall. Khamis graduated first in her class at Richmond High School in Indiana. She was a three-time state finalist, three-time sectional champion, four-time conference champion and conference record holder. She trained with the Indiana International School of Diving and her favorite event is the 3-meter springboard.
GopherSports: Why did you choose the University of Minnesota?
Mariam Khamis: Honestly, I just felt like everything clicked. I really liked the divers on the team and Wenbo Chen's training style. I also liked the Midwestern feel that I am used to, with the city vibe of Minneapolis.
GopherSports: What are you looking forward to the most with starting your collegiate career as a Golden Gopher?
Khamis: I am really looking forward to getting stronger and learning new dives. Also, I am really excited to compete on a collegiate level against some of the best athletes in the country. I am also looking forward to concentrating on my interest in science and math.
GopherSports: Thus far, what has been your best or proudest diving memory?
Khamis: Winning Summer Zones on 3-meter after overcoming a back injury.
GopherSports: What do you like to do for fun outside of the pool?
Khamis: I really enjoy taking art classes, especially painting. Shopping with friends is also one of my favorite hobbies (which makes living close to the Mall of America slightly dangerous)!
GopherSports: How do you think you will contribute to the Gopher swimming and diving program?
Khamis: I have been lucky to come from a really supportive team, even when competing directly against each other. I am definitely going to bring this to the team next year. Also, I love to work hard, take advantage of every opportunity to get better and strive to put my coach's priorities first.
