Jones, Vining Conclude Play at U.S. Amateur

Future Minnesota freshmen Tom Vining and Peter Jones both concluded play at the U.S. Amateur Championship Tuesday. Jones was one of five players from the state of Minnesota, and Vining was the only South Dakotan in the field.
Both finished 6 over par during qualifying at Olympia Fields Country Club in Illinois. Jones shot a 74 on the South Course Monday, then a 72 on the North Course Tuesday. Vining posted scores of 73 at both.
Play was suspended due to darkness on Tuesday, and when the second round concluded on Wednesday, Jones and Vining had missed the cut to advance to match play by three strokes.
The duo will debut in college golf at Minnesota's Gopher Invitational. The 11th annual tournament runs Sept. 13-14 at Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minn.
