Wisconsin state record-holder Rachel Munson will begin her freshman campaign as a Gopher this fall. The breaststroke specialist hails from Milwaukee and has experience competing for both Shorewood High School and Shorewood Swim Club. Munson showed a strong performance earlier this month at the NCSA Summer Championships where she took home the gold in the 50-meter breaststroke with a 31.62, recording a new NCSA long course record. Munson also placed third in both the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:09.15 and 200-meter breaststroke (2:33.21). She joins a successful breaststroke program at Minnesota coached by Kelly Kremer, who has had three NCAA Champions in the stroke in the past five years.

GopherSports: Why did you choose the University of Minnesota?
Rachel Munson: I chose Minnesota because I loved absolutely everything about the school! The team, coaches and campus all seemed like a perfect fit for me. I couldn't imagine myself going anywhere else.

GopherSports: What are you looking forward to the most with starting your collegiate career as a Golden Gopher?
Munson: I'm really looking forward to being part of the Gopher swimming family and having amazing teammates and coaches to learn from and have fun with - along with being able to compete at the collegiate level.

GopherSports: Thus far, what has been your best or most proud swimming memory?
Munson: My most proud swimming memory was when I won the NCSA Spring Junior Nationals in the 100 breaststroke.

GopherSports: What do you like to do for fun outside of the pool?
Munson: Outside of the pool, I love to hang out with friends, listen to music and go to concerts and hike around and explore outside.

GopherSports: How do you think you will contribute to the Gopher swimming and diving program?
Munson: Hopefully I will be able to contribute by becoming a strong breaststroker and being able to score points for the team, as well as be a part of the already amazing team atmosphere.
