Mendez at the Western Amateur Championship

Returning junior Jose Mendez competed at the 113th Western Amateur Championship. He tied for 46th at the event, held at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
Mendez is a two-time All-Big Ten First Team selection, and won the Big Ten Championship as a freshman in 2014. He holds a 71.86 career stroke average, including the third-best season average in program history after posting a 71.74 mark in 2015.

When Mendez completed his first round, he was tied for the clubhouse lead with a 67 (-5). No one after him caught up, and he and Dawson Armstrong will enter Day 2 with a share of the lead.
Mendez bogeyed the first hole, but bounced back with birdies on 5 and 7. He later vaulted up the leaderboard with four consecutive birdies beginning on the 11th hole. He then shot even par over the last four holes.
Day 2: Wednesday, Aug. 5 (Stroke Play)
Mendez started on the 10th hole and was even par on the day through nine with birdies on 11 and 15, but missed the 36-hole cut by one stroke after playing the front nine 6 over. He finished 1 over for the tournament and tied for 46th.
