Vining Fifth at Gopher Invitational

In his collegiate debut, freshman Tom Vining finished fifth to highlight Minnesota's performance at its home tournament, the Gopher Invitational. Vining finished 4 over par to claim a top-five finish, while the Gophers' first team finished 14th and their second team finished 15th.
Four groups finished the second round before the field was regrouped for a shotgun start in the final round at Windsong Farm Golf Club.
Vining, playing for Minnesota's second team, carded a 3-over 74 in his final round. Combined with his 73 and 70 yesterday, his total score was 217.
On the first team, Riley Johnson tied for 17th to earn his fourth career top-20 finish. He shot his best score, a 72, Monday to close out an 8-over tournament.
Jose Mendez posted the Gophers' lowest score of the day. He shot a 1-under 70 and tied for 39th (+12) along with Grady Meyer, who shot 75 each round for the "A" team. The "B" team's Justin Doeden shot a 73 for his lowest score of the tournament and also tied for 39th.
Eight of 11 Gophers who played recorded their lowest scores of the tournament, including ties of previous lows, in the final round. One of those eight was the "A" team's third scorer of the day, Rúnar Arnorsson. He shot a 73. Both the "A" team (290) and "B" team (298) had their lowest combined scores in the third round.
Oklahoma won the 11th annual Gopher Invitational with a team score of 854 (+2). The Sooners swept top honors as Max McGreevy was the medalist (-7) and Luke Kwon (-4) was the runner-up. California finished 21 shots behind Oklahoma in second. 2014 team champion Baylor finished tied for third with Kent State, and 2014 medalist Victor Wiggins of Charlotte tied for 14th.
Up next: The Gophers will send team members to Washington's Husky Invitational (Sept. 21-22) and the St. John's (Minn.) Fall Invitational (Sept. 19-20).
