The No. 21 University of Minnesota volleyball program earned an upset win over No. 12 Ohio State, 3-2, tonight in Columbus, Ohio. The Golden Gophers improve to 9-2 overall and are now 1-0 in the Big Ten Conference. The win also marks the highest-ranked team the Gophers have defeated this season, after defeating then No. 18 North Carolina earlier this year.
Daly Santana led the team with 19 kills, followed by Paige Tapp with 15 and Hannah Tapp with 12. Minnesota hit .198 as a team and had 12 blocks. OSU hit .162 and had 13 blocks. The Gophers held a 78-71 dig advantage and a 62-57 lead in kills. Dalianliz Rosado had a match-high 20 digs. Samantha Seliger-Swenson contributed 53 assists and six kills.
Minnesota travels to No. 1 Penn State Saturday night. The Gophers and Nittany Lions are set to battle at 7 p.m. CT.
Set 1: Minnesota took a 1-0 lead when it hit .300 in the set and had 40 attempts to OSU’s 31. Santana had five kills, followed by Hannah Tapp and Seliger-Swenson each with four. After being tied at 5-5, Minnesota held the lead until the 20-20 mark. Minnesota took a 10-6 lead as the Buckeyes called a timeout. The Buckeyes responded and cut the lead to 12-10 as the Gophers used a timeout. The Gophers would go up 15-12 on an OSU service error. OSU tied up the set on a Gopher attack error. Minnesota, however, would take a 22-20 lead off a kill from Seliger-Swenson and an OSU attack error. The Buckeyes would use another timeout, but Minnesota finished off the set on a kill from Sarah Wilhite for set point as Paige Tapp put the Gophers up 1-0 with her second kill of the set.
Set 2: The Gophers utilized seven blocks and three aces to take a 25-12 second set win and a 2-0 lead. Minnesota opened the second set with a 6-0 run, which forced OSU to use its first timeout. The Buckeyes would use their second timeout as Minnesota held an 11-2 lead off a Santana kill. Following the timeout, Minnesota would have four blocks and increase the lead to 17-3. Minnesota pushed the lead to 18-5 on a Seliger-Swenson kill from Rosado. The Gophers would add their seventh block of the set to take a commanding 21-9 lead. Minnesota closed out the set on back-to-back kills from Paige Tapp to go up 2-0.
Set 3: OSU took the second set, 25-23 and cut the Gopher lead to 2-1. Minnesota took a 10-7 lead as Goehner won the joust at the net. OSU, however, rattled off three points of its own to tie the set at 10-10. OSU took a lead at 13-12 with a kill as Minnesota called a timeout. As OSU lead, 15-12, Minnesota responded with back-to-back kills by Santana and an attack error by OSU to tie up the set. The two teams traded points until OSU took a three-point lead at 20-17 off a kill, an ace and another kill as Minnesota called a timeout. The Buckeyes would later take a 23-19 lead off a kill. Minnesota closed the gap to 23-21 and 24-23 off a Santana kill as OSU used its second timeout. The Buckeyes, however, would close out the set with a 25-23 win to cut Minnesota’s lead to 2-1. With the set loss, it was the first time since the Louisville match (9/4) the Gophers dropped a set, going 24 straight.
Set 4: Ohio State hit .268 and added five blocks to tie the match at 2-2. OSU opened the fourth set with a 9-6 lead as Minnesota called a timeout. Minnesota would tie up the set as Paige Tapp rattled off three kills for a 9-9 tie. Tied at 13, OSU used a four-point rally and took a 17-13 lead. OSU would later take a 20-14 lead off a kill. Minnesota would get two-straight on a Gopher block and an OSU attack error to cut the lead to 20-16. OSU would take a 24-18 on a Gopher attack error and the set on a kill to tie up the match, 2-2.
Set 5: The Gophers took the match with a 15-11 fifth-set win. Minnesota took an early 5-2 lead in the fifth set, which forced OSU to call a timeout. After a Sarah Wilhite kill, OSU had a bad set and an attack error to give Minnesota the 5-2 lead. OSU responded out of the break with three-straight points to tie up the set, 5-5. Tied at 7-7, Minnesota gained a two-point lead at 9-7 off a Santana kill and an OSU error. With just an 11-10 lead, OSU would commit a service error to put the Gophers up 12-10. Santana then took over the set when she had three-straight kills to close out the match.
