Final Stats


The University of Minnesota volleyball team earned a 3-0 win over No. 18 North Carolina, today, in conjunction with the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, held in Louisville, Ky. With the win, the Golden Gophers improve to 2-2 on the season as they earned a 3-2 last night over host Louisville.

Hannah Tapp had 10 kills in 18 swings to hit a team-best .389. Daly Santana had 13 kills in 45 attempts, while Alyssa Goehner had 10 kills in 28 swings. Dalianliz Rosado added a career-high 27 digs. She broke her previous best of 21, set last year vs. Nebraska. Katie Schau also had 11 digs, followed by Goehner with eight. Samantha Seliger-Swenson have a match-high 36 assists, while Paige Tapp led the Gophers with three total blocks. As a team, the Gophers out hit UNC .221 to .176 and had 59 digs to the Tar Heels’ 55. UNC outblocked Minnesota, 12-5.

Minnesota is set to open the home season, Sept. 11-12 as the Gophers host the Diet Coke Classic. Six matches will occur throughout the tournament, held at the Sports Pavilion, as UC Irvine, North Dakota State and UCF come to town.

Set Breakdown:

Set 1: Minnesota opened the match with a 25-23 win. The Gophers and Tar Heels exchanged points until the 11-11 mark. From then on, the Gophers maintained the lead. Minnesota went on a 9-2 run for a 20-13 lead, capped off by a Hannah Tapp kill. UNC went on a run of its own and closed the Gopher lead to one at 20-19, 22-21 and 23-22 before the Gophers won the set, off back-to-back kills from Santana.

Set 2: After eight tie scores and four lead changes, Minnesota took the second set, 25-22. As the two teams held a tight set through 12-12, the Gophers went on a 6-1 run for an 18-13 lead. UNC would battle back and cut the Gopher lead to 20-17 on a block, but Minnesota pushed the lead back to four on a kill by Hannah Tapp. The Gophers were at set point on a kill from Hannah Tapp, but UNC added back-to-back points with a block and a kill as Minnesota called a timeout. The Gophers came out of the timeout with a Santana kill for a 25-22 win and a 2-0 match lead.

Set 3: Minnesota swept the Tar Heels with a 25-18 third-set win. Minnesota controlled the play from the get-go as it jumped out to a 7-2 lead. North Carolina took a timeout, but the Gophers established the lead and built on it for the remainder of the set. Lohman added a solo block for a 10-3 lead, while Goehner pushed the score to 15-7. As UNC attempted a comeback at 16-12, Minnesota called a timeout and would eventually add to the lead when it went up, 19-14 on a kill from Hannah Tapp. With a Santana kill, the Gophers led by 23-16 and closed out the match with a UNC attack error and a Goehner kill for the win.
