Mendez Prepares for Latin America Amateur Championship

Jose Mendez begins play at the Latin America Amateur Championship on Jan. 14. The tournament, which runs through Jan. 17, is being held at Casa de Campo's Teeth of the Dog Course in the Dominican Republic.
The winner of the LAAC will earn an invitation to the Masters, and exemptions for the Amateur Championship and any USGA amateur championships for which he is eligible, including the U.S. Amateur Championship.
The LAAC is a 72-hole stroke play tournament with a 36-hole cut for the leading 50 players plus ties. The field is made up of invitees from 29 different countries and territories. Mendez was named as a player to watch.
More Gophers Notes
*Charlie Duensing set a course record with a 61 in the first round of the St. George Amateur in Utah. He finished third in the tournament. His record-breaking round included three eagles.
*Tom Vining closed the Saguaro Amateur in Arizona with scores of 72 and 70. He tied for 25th.
