MINNEAPOLIS - The Golden Gopher women's track & field team won 10 event titles en route to a 93-66 win over the Badgers in the second-annual Minnesota-Wisconsin Dual at the Minnesota Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.
"It was a very exciting win today," director of women's track & field and cross country Matt Bingle said. "I thought everyone represented the team and the university well. They came in and did their job. I thought we executed well and did a good job of accomplishing what we discussed as a team. We talked about bringing the fight to them, taking care of business, and taking care of our track. I thought we did that, but there's a lot more work to be done. Overall, it was a good team meet today."
Emerald Egwim led the Gophers with two titles. She ran career-best times in the 60-meter dash (7.63 seconds) and the 200-meter dash (24.78 seconds) to win both events. Kat Keller took home the crown in the 400-meter dash in 56.95, and the Gophers' 4x400-meter relay team of Erin Huls, Stacey Swatek, Kate Shelerud, and Titania Markland won in 3:49.38 as Minnesota swept the sprints
The Gophers enjoyed similar success in the mid-distance events as Markland and Swatek took home titles in the 600-meter run and the 800-meter run, respectively. Markland ran 1:31.81, setting a new Minnesota-Wisconsin Dual meet record in the 600m, and Swatek ran 2:14.67 to win the 800m.
Kimberly Golding and Emma Spagnola took the top two spots in the 60-meter hurdles, rounding out the Gophers' titles on the track. Golding won in 8.41 seconds, followed by Spagnola at 8.45.
In the field events, Jess Lehman won the long jump at 6.03m (19-09.50). Rookies Sofie Albrechtsen and Shanique Wright won events as each made her official collegiate debut after previously competing unattached. Albrechtsen won the high jump by clearing 1.77m (5-09.75), and Shanique Wright jumped 12.08m (39-07.75) to win the triple jump title and move into eighth on the Gophers' all-time list.
Huls and Sophie Anderson joined Albrechtsen and Wright in making their official collegiate debuts at the meet. Huls led off the Gophers' 4x400m relay team and took third in the 600m in 1:35.93 while Anderson was the runner-up in the 400m (57.82) and took fourth in the 60m (8.13).
Other highlights on the track included Liz Berkholtz (9:37.15) and Madeline Strandemo (9:50.59) running career-best times in the 3,000-meter run, placing second and fifth, respectively. Bolade Jinadu also recorded two career-best times in the 200m (25.83) and the 400m (57.95) as well.
The Gophers earned three career-best marks in the weight throw. Behind Lyndsey Thorpe's runner-up showing of 19.58m (64-03), the trio of Agnes Esser (19.25, 63-02), Angie Guenther (17.90m, 58-8.75) and Ke-ke Burks (17.42m, 57-02) recorded career bests.
