Gophers Win Five Titles at Parents Day Invite

MINNEAPOLIS - The Golden Gophers took home five event titles as the Minnesota women's track & field team hosted the Parents Day Invite at the Minnesota Fieldhouse Saturday. In total, the Gophers recorded 43 top-10 finishes and 28 career-best marks.
Minnesota won both throwing events as Kiley Sabin set a new career-best mark to win the shot put, moving into seventh among all-time Gophers with a throw of 15.39m (50-06.00). Meanwhile, Lyndsey Thorpe won the weight throw with a toss of 19.61m (64-04.00), her second best throw of the season.
On the track, Bolade Jinadu and Paige Peschel won titles. Jinadu won the 400-meter dash in 57.32 seconds, her second fastest time of the season, finishing over 90 seconds ahead of her closest competitor in a field of 28 in the 400m. Peschel clocked a career-best time of 1:35.19 to win the 600-meter dash, leading seven Gophers in the top 10.
Minnesota also won the 4x400-meter relay as the team of Erin Huls, Jinadu, Sophia Anderson, and Lindsey Smits ran 3:58.02.
The Gophers honored their 18 seniors at the Parents Day Invite, including distance runners Liz Berkholtz, Melissa Cabak, Caitlin Dillon, Haley Johnson, Ally McSherry, Taylor Mikkalson, Jamie Piepenburg, Kate Shelerud, Stacey Swatek, Kaila Urick, and Rebecca Wesley; multi-event athletes Alex Beckman, Amanda Beckman, Jess Lehman, and Audra Winter; long jumper Kelly Flynn; and throwers Ke-ke Burks and Lyndsey Thorpe.
Several of the seniors had strong performances in the final home meet of their careers. In addition to Thorpe's weight throw title, two other seniors picked up top-10 finishes. Flynn placed sixth in the long jump at 5.09m (16-08.50), and Wesley finished eighth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:20.40. Meanwhile, Dillon ran a career-best in the mile at 5:26.09.
Minnesota travels to the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio, for the 2016 Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday, Feb. 26 and Saturday, Feb. 27.
