MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota rowing team held a successful start to their season at their home course, competing in the Head of the Mississippi regatta on Saturday afternoon.

Under warm, sunny skies, the Gophers claimed victories in each of their three races - the novice 8 and the varsity 4 and 8. Head coach Wendy Davis was pleased with the team's effort in their first race.

"We had a solid day on a beautiful October day," said Davis. "The conditions were beautiful, and the current was quite fast which made for long races. It was fun to have Creighton here racing as well."

In the first race of the day for the Gophers, the collegiate 4+, the Gophers' A boat of Meredith Kelly, Catherine Ahrens, Anna Greene, Sara Nelson and Emily Appold posted the fastest time of 24:36, while the B boat of Maighdlin Shaughnessy, Kortney Luedloff, Haley Bagley, Rylie Wargo, and Anna Cruse was second with a time of 24:55.

The second race was the first for the novice rowers, competing in the collegiate freshman 8+. Minnesota's B boat (Vogel, Traun, Tunberg, Sjoberg, Staples, Rogala, Orning, Stratton, Maguire) captured the top time of 28:30, while the A boat (Frazier, Hadcock, Ohnstad, Williams, Burgstahler, Howie, Doi, Szcygielski, DeLaundreau) finished close behind at 28:41.

Finally, the final event of the day came in the collegiate 8+, and the Gopher boats took the top 3 spots in alphabetical order. The A boat of Anna Stockstad, Lauren Gonsalves, Maggie Bieber, Allison Sterneman, Erika Guenther, Katrina Hetico, Addie Morris, Maura Dahl, and Emily Stock was first with a time of 21:46, while the B boat of Maighdlin Shaughnessy, Lauren Burrows-Chang, Bee Lovick, Christina Anderson, Abby Rieser, Maggie Bostwick, Sarah Heemstra, Olivia Zoner, and Allison Martinez was second in 22:23. Minnesota's C boat of Elyse Terlion, Emily Appold, Catherine Ahrens, Samantha Rollay, Sara Nelson, Savannah Spahr, Sarah Vonde Goltz, McKenzie Lukacs, and Katie VanCamp was third, finishing in 22:39.

The Gophers will be back in action in three weeks, traveling to Massachusetts for the prestigious Head of the Charles in Boston on October 23.
