Minnesota women's soccer earned its third-straight conference win against Michigan State in a 2-1 decision on Thursday evening at DeMartin Soccer Stadium. The Gophers record improves to 12-3-1 (6-1-1) on the season.
"We're certainly happy with the final result," head coach Stefanie Golan said. "I thought we played particularly well on the attacking side of the ball, and created a number of opportunites."
Junior Kellie McGahn scored in the ninth minute of the game off a cross from Molly Fiedler to get Minnesota on the scoreboard early. McGahn scored her first collegiate goal last game, and has now scored in two-straight games.
In the 38th minute, Michigan State's Michaela Kovacs scored at the top of the 18 to tie things up heading into the half.
Sydney Squires notched the game-winner as she found the back of the net in the 80th minute of the match. Josee Stiever was credited the assist, her sixth of the season.
Goalkeeper Tarah Hobbs recorded three saves in the win. Simone Kolander, Fiedler, Emily Heslin, Nikki Albrecht, Rashida Beal and Tori Burnett also played all 90 minutes.
"Credit to our women for continuing to stick with the game plan and increasing defensive pressure in the second half." Golan said.
The Gophers led all aspects of the game in shots (18-7), shots on goal (7-4), corner kick opportunities (4-3). Squires led the team with five shots, with three on goal.
"One of the awesome things about this team is the different players we have stepping up and getting it done," Golan added.
Minnesota is scheduled for a match against #25 Michigan this Sunday, Oct. 16 in Ann Arbor, Mich. The game will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network and kickoff is slated for 11:00 a.m. CT.
