No. 15 Minnesota tied 0-0 with No. 25 Michigan in double overtime on Sunday afternoon at U-M Soccer Stadium. The Gophers move to 12-3-2 (6-1-2) on the season. Goalkeeper Tarah Hobbs tallied three saves in the match to record her 30th career shutout, breaking her program record again.
"We're certainly proud of the way our team played," head coach Stefanie Golan said. "We created a lot of good looks, and it felt like we did everything but put one in the back of the net."
Minnesota led all aspects of the 110-minute game, including shots (17-12), shots on goal (11-3) and corner kick opportunities (6-3). Golden Gopher Simone Kolander led the team with seven shots, five on goal. Julianna Gernes had four shots with three on net.
"Credit to Michigan for putting a ton of numbers behind the ball and making it tough," Golan said. "But we felt like we were in our attacking third of the field the majority of the game."
Through two overtime periods, neither team was able to score a golden goal, resulting in Minnesota's second tie of the season.
"We're going to turn the page," Golan said. "We'll continue to work on breaking teams down when they put numbers behind the ball, execution of set pieces, and hopefully moving forward we'll be able to deal with games like this a little bit better."
The Gophers are scheduled to face No. 22 Northwestern in Evanston, Ill. on Saturday, Oct. 22. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. CT. Minnesota will then return to Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium for its final game of the regular season against Maryland on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 7:00 p.m. CT.
