Fans planning to attend Friday night's men's hockey game against St. Cloud State are advised to plan ahead, as the University of Minnesota's Homecoming parade will alter traffic flow on campus that evening.

Prior to the 8 p.m. faceoff between the Gophers and the Huskies, the Homecoming parade will make its way through Dinkytown along University Ave., starting at 6:30. The parade will likely conclude shortly before the game begins.

Because of the parade's route, University Ave. will be closed between 12th Ave. SE and Oak St. SE on Friday evening until after the parade concludes. Not only will this keep normal vehicle traffic off that stretch of the road, it will also likely lead to significant backups for those trying to exit Interstate 35W at the University Ave./4th St. exit, a popular route for those coming to campus for athletic events.

Fans are encouraged to plan alternate routes. One suggested approach, with easy access to Mariucci without having to contest with any parade traffic, is to use Interstate 94 and exit at Huron Blvd. Parking options along this route to the arena include the Maroon and Gold surface lots, as well as the Oak St. Ramp.

Other ways to avoid or minimize the impact of traffic delays include utilizing public transportation (bus or light rail), carpooling with other ticketholders, walking or biking. Perhaps the most enjoyable way to avoid a traffic crunch near faceoff is to arrive on campus early and enjoy the Homecoming parade.
