Final Stats

In front of a crowd of 5,337, the No. 2 ranked University of Minnesota volleyball team defeated No. 18 Michigan in five sets Sunday afternoon, 25-23, 25-23, 23-25, 23-25, 15-12. The Gophers improve to 23-4 overall, 15-3 in the Big Ten and remain undefeated at home.

As a team, Minnesota put up 12 blocks to Michigan's seven, earning 72 kills and 77 digs. Sarah Wilhite earned a double-double with 26 career-high kills and 13 digs. Alexis Hart put up 14 kills, and Hannah Tapp had 11 with five blocks. Molly Lohman had nine kills with seven blocks, and Paige Tapp had five kills and blocks. Alyssa Goehner established 12 digs, while Katie Schau had 10 and Dalianliz Rosado had a match-high 24 digs. Samantha Seliger-Swenson put down a career high seven kills, with 55 assists and 13 digs.

Minnesota will finish out the remainder of the Big Ten season at home next week, facing Nebraska on Wednesday at 8 p.m. and Wisconsin on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.


Set Breakdown:

Set 1: The Gophers earned a 25-23 set win, outhitting the Wolverines, .200 to .167. Tied early, Minnesota pushed the score to 11-6 off a P Tapp/Seliger-Swenson block. The Wolverines responded and later cut Minnesota's lead to 15-12, however, Minnesota went on a 4-0 run and a 19-13 lead before Michigan called a timeout. After a Seliger-Swenson kill at 21-117 and a Michigan attack error, the Wolverines called their second timeout. As the Gophers put the match at set point off a Lohman kill and 24-20, Michigan fought it off for three-straight. The Gophers took a timeout at 24-22 and later won the set on a H Tapp kill and the 1-0 lead.

Set 2: Minnesota rallied for a 25-23 second set win. Tied at 11-11, Michigan went up two at 15-13 on a block. After trailing 18-16, Minnesota came back and tied it at 18-18 in back-to-back points from a Wilhite kill and a Seliger-Swenson ace. The two teams tied again at 19, 20, 21 and 22 before the Gophers pulled away at set point on a Seliger-Swenson kill and a Michigan attack error. The set point, forced Michigan to call a timeout. After a Gopher service error and a one-point lead, the Gophers called a timeout. Minnesota finished off the set with a Wilhite kill for a 2-0 lead.

Set 3: The Wolverines added a 25-23 set win. Michigan opened the third set with a 9-7 lead as Minnesota called a timeout. The Wolverines took a 13-8 lead off a kill. Minnesota cut the lead to 15-13 on a Michigan service error. Michigan went up 18-14 as the Gophers called their second timeout. Minnesota pulled within three at 19-16 on a H Tapp/Seliger-Swenson block. The Gophers cut the Michigan lead to two at 20-18 as the Wolverines called their first timeout of the set. As Michigan pushed it to set point, 24-21, Minnesota added two points off a Michigan service error and a H Tapp/Lohman block. It forced Michigan to call a timeout as they finished off the set on a kill.

Set 4: Michigan tied the match with a 25-23 set win. Michigan opened the fourth with a 12-9 lead. The Gophers cut the Wolverine lead to 16-15 off a Wilhite kill. However, two attack errors by the Gophers put Michigan up 18-15, which forced Minnesota to call a timeout. Minnesota went on a 4-1 run to tie the set at 19-19 after a Hart kill, a Wilhite kill and a P Tapp ace. The two teams tied at 20 and 21 before Michigan added a two-point lead at 22-20 before the Gophers called their second timeout. As Michigan pushed the score to set point, 24-21, Minnesota came back and added two points, but Michigan took a timeout and closed out the set with a kill to tie the match up, 2-2.

Set 5: The Gophers took the set and match, winning 15-12. Minnesota opened the fifth set with a 5-1 lead, but Michigan came back to cut the lead to 6-5 as the Gophers called a timeout. The Wolverines continued their run and led 8-6 as the two teams switched sides. Minnesota came back and tied the set with kills from H Tapp and Hart. After the two teams tied at 11-11, the Gophers pulled ahead with a four-point run, and Michigan errors ended the match.
