Hubbard Shines as Gophers Fall to Tar Heels

Freshman Gadiva Hubbard stood out in a back-and-forth game against North Carolina, but the Minnesota fell 91-77. Hubbard scored a career-high 21 points, including 16 in the second half of the Gophers' second game at the Junkanoo Jam in Bimini, Bahamas. She entered the day as the second-leading scorer among Big Ten freshmen.

Carlie Wagner scored 19 points with five 3-pointers, and Karley Barnes approached a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds. Kenisha Bell added 12 points and eight assists.

The game featured 18 lead changes and 11 ties. Tied at 37 at the half, the Gophers and Tar Heels played a tight third quarter. Minnesota built a small lead early in the fourth, but North Carolina went on a run of its own and pulled away later in the period. Paris Kea led the Heels with 32 points.

Minnesota tallied 47 rebounds to Carolina's 43. The Gophers shot 41.1 percent, and Carolina 43.8. Each team made eight 3-pointers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter: Minnesota led 22-19, getting six points from Bell in the opening period. Barnes provided a boost from the bench with four first-quarter points.

Second Quarter: A Wagner layup extended a Minnesota lead to 31-24 about midway through the quarter. The Tar Heels rallied to send both teams to the locker room with 37 points at halftime.

Third Quarter: Minnesota put together a 9-0 run which included six consecutive points by Hubbard. This gave the Maroon and Gold a 54-47 advantage before the Heels went on a run of their own.

Fourth Quarter: Hubbard reached her 21-point total on a 3-pointer that put Minnesota ahead 66-62 with eight minutes remaining. Wagner hit two 3-pointers in the quarter, but UNC began to pull ahead led by Kea and Destinee Walker down the stretch.

MORE NOTES
*Wagner passed Ellen Kramer in the Gopher record books for fifth place on the list of players with the most games in double figures. Wagner's total is 61, including the past 40 in a row.
*Friday's game marked the third time in her career Barnes tallied 10 or more rebounds.

UP NEXT
Minnesota will return home to host Florida State in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The game is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 30 at 6 p.m. and will air on BTN.
