Gophers Go 2-2 at B1G Match Play

The Gophers finished 2-2 at the Big Ten Match Play in Palm Coast, Fla. Minnesota started Saturday with a win 3.5-2.5 against Nebraska before falling to Penn State by the same score in the fifth-place match of the tournament.
Rúnar Arnorsson won all four of his matches in the two-day event, including 1-up and 3&2 victories Saturday. Jon DuToit and Tom Vining each tallied three wins and a tie.
"DuToit, Arnorsson and Vining had impressive weekends," head coach John Carlson said. "Ten wins, two ties and zero losses from those three players in 12 matches this week speaks volumes to the progress made since the start of the school year for Gopher golf."
In the morning match against the Cornhuskers, Vining took the lead on his 13th hole and beat Jackson Wendling 3&2. In a match that was close the whole way, Arnorsson won his final two holes to beat Sean Song 1 up. DuToit held a lead for his last eight holes to defeat Dylan McCabe 2&1. Mendez halved his match with Jace Guthmiller.
Vining birdied his final hole against Penn State's Charles Huntzinger to win his match. DuToit birdied his final two holes to halve his match with Evan Santa. Arnorsson took the lead back from Cole Miller after his 10th hole and held it for a 3&2 win.
"Tough battle these four rounds on a demanding golf course with high winds," Carlson said. "Our team took a step forward this week with two quality wins in a conference full of nationally ranked teams. We have plenty of work to do this week in practice to give ourselves the best opportunity for success next weekend at Purdue's tournament, though. The spring season is young and will be exciting thanks to a determined group of players."
Michigan State won the championship match.
