The Golden Gophers are set to host the 2016 Minnesota Challenge at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center this Friday, Feb. 5 and Saturday, Feb. 6 in a three-session invitational. The competition will include 23 programs, and will be the last before the B1G Championships. While it will be the final meet of the year for some Gophers, others will use the meet to fine-tune for the championships season.
In addition to the Gophers, teams set to compete include: Augsburg College, Carlton College, College of St. Mary's, Concordia College, Gustavus Adolphus College, Hamline University, Iowa Central Community College, Minnesota State University Mankato (divers only), Minnesota State University Moorhead (divers only), Morningside College, South Dakota State University, St. Cloud State University, St. John's, University, St. Catherine University, St. Mary's University, St. Olaf College, University of North Dakota, University of South Dakota, UW-Eau Claire (divers only) and UW-Steven's Point.
LAST TIME OUT
Minnesota swept the B1G Triple Dual against the Northwestern Wildcats and Purdue Boilermakers this past weekend in Evanston, Illinois. Six Gophers had double individual event wins in the two-day meet, and the women's 400 free relay broke the Norris Aquatics Pool Record. Yu Zhou was also named B1G Diver of the Week, for the eighth time this season, for her performances in the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events.
IN THE RANKS
The Minnesota men's program ranks No. 23 on the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) as of Feb. 4. The Gophers have an overall season record of 7-3, with their last loss in mid-October. The Gopher women's squad is currently ranked No. 24 in the latest CSCAA poll as of Jan. 27. The team holds a 8-1-1 record.
B1G CHAMPIONSHIPS UP NEXT
The 2016 Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships will run from Wednesday, Feb. 17 to Saturday, Feb. 20 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Minnesota has been B1G Championships the past four years, and will test their young team amongst a highly competitive conference. The B1G Men's Swimming and Diving Championships will follow the week after from Wednesday, Feb. 24 through Saturday, Feb. 27, hosted by Purdue. The Gopher men finished 6th at last year's conference championship.
