Berkholtz, Markland Win Titles to Lead Gophers

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Titania Markland and Liz Berkholtz won their respective events to lead the Golden Gophers on day one of the Meyo Invitational hosted by Notre Dame on Friday night.
Markland won the 600-meter run in a career-best 1:28.51 to rank third in Gophers' history while Berkholtz won the 5,000-meter run in 16:37.77 racing her first 5,000m of the season.
Select event finals were held on Friday with the majority of the competition taking place Saturday at Notre Dame's annual meet.
The Gophers' distance medley relay team of Kaila Urick, Kate Shelerud, Stacey Swatek, and Haley Johnson placed third in 11:28.26.
Minnesota placed two in the top seven of the weight throw final led by Ke-ke Burks with a throw of 19.06m (62-06.50) for fifth, and Lyndsey Thorpe was seventh at 18.85m (61-10.25).
In preliminary action, Erin Hawkins advanced to the 60-meter dash final with a season-best time of 7.62 seconds. She also ran a season-best 24.635 to place 14th in the 200-meter dash final.
Emma Spagnola also moved past preliminary competition on Friday, advancing to Saturday's final in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.582 seconds.
Shanique Wright recorded a season-best leap of 5.59m (18-04.25) to place 14th in the long jump.
The Meyo Invitational continues Saturday, beginning with the women's 3,000-meter run at 8:45 a.m. CT. at the Notre Dame's Loftus Sports Center.
