Rúnar Arnorsson won his first collegiate event, leading the Gophers to a second-place team finish at the Barona Collegiate Cup. The Gophers shot 880 as a team over the three rounds and had their best finish of the 2015-16 season.
Arnorsson carded a 9-under score of 207 for the tournament, which is tied for the 12th best 54-hole score in program history. He had the most birdies of anyone in the tournament with 18, and was second in eagles, recording two on the par-5 sixth hole
"Rúnar made history this week," head coach John Carlson said. "Not only did he win the individual championship by 3 shots, he was the first Gopher to win since Jose Mendez in 2014 and he etched his name in the record books for lowest 18-hole score in Gopher lf history."
Arnorsson broke personal records for best finish, total score, round score, and tournament score to par, while also breaking the program record for best round with a 10-under 62 in the first round. He is the first Gopher to place first at a tournament since Jose Mendez at the 2014 Big Ten Tournament.
Playing as an individual, Riley Johnson also placed in the top-20 of the tournament. Johnson posted identical scores of 73 in the second two rounds of the competition and finished with a total score of 218, tying for 17th overall.
As a team, the Gophers played consistently, with all five team members placing in the top half of the field.
"I am proud of the way we competed this week," Carlson said. "Coming home from California with an eighth and second-place finish gives us confidence entering the championship portion of our 2015-16 schedule."
Justin Doeden birdied his final hole of the round Tuesday, sealing his second straight round of 75. He had a total score of 223 in the tournament and tied for 24th. Jon DuToit had a 74 in the final round, finishing with just one more stroke than Doeden at 224 and in a tie for 26th. Both Doeden and DuToit had their best finishes of the spring season.
Tom Vining also recorded his best finish this spring, tying for 35th with a total score of 227. Vining led the tournament in pars, with 39 across the three rounds. The final team member for the Gophers, Grady Meyer, had a score of 230 and finished in a tie for 43rd.
Matt Rachey, Charlie Duensing and Jose Mendez also were competing as individuals in the event, finishing tied for 47th, tied for 55th and tied for 75th, respectively. Mendez had his best round of the competition Tuesday, with a 76 in the final round.
San Diego State won the team title with a 26-under three-round score of 838.
