3/6/2016 12:00:00 AM | Men's Golf
A solid outing in the first round of the 2016 Tiger Invitational has the Gophers in a tie for third after Sunday's first round. Minnesota played consistently as a team, posting a team score of 291 with only two strokes separating the top four positions on the team.
The Gophers were led by their four and five golfers, who both finished in a tie for 12th. The first of the two, Rúnar Arnorsson, shot a 72 and had three birdies, all of which came on par 5 holes.
Grady Meyer, who was selected to play for the Gophers after Saturday's practice round, also finished with an even 72. Meyer got in trouble early, picking up two bogeys over the first four holes. He then eagled the par 5 hole 7 to bring his score back to even par. Meyer was one of only two players to have an eagle on Sunday.
Justin Doeden led the team in birdies with five, including one on the first hole and back-to-back birdies on the final two holes. Doeden shot a 73 and was in a tie for 23rd at the end of the round.
Jon DuToit birdied three of the final seven holes, finishing with a two over 74. DuToit was tied for 28th after Sunday's round. Tom Vining also competed for the Gophers, shooting a 79.
Host school Auburn held the lead at the end of the day, shooting 285 as a team. Matt Gilchrest of Auburn led individuals with a 4-under 68.
