Minnesota matched its best to start to a season since 2009 when it took two of three in a non-conference series at Georgia State last weekend. The Gophers improved to 7-3 overall and have won back-to-back non-league road series since they defeated Sacramento State and Saint Mary's in 2014.
The Maroon and Gold won in a multitude of fashions throughout the three games in Atlanta, Ga. Pitching dominated the opening fixture, as Minnesota secured a shutout on the arm of Matt Fiedler. The Gophers then took the series by setting season-highs in runs (11) and hits (16) in the victory on Sunday.
No Soup for You
On Friday afternoon, Minnesota got a spectacular performance on the mound from junior Matt Fiedler. The Eagan, Minn. native tossed a complete-game shutout for the first time DJ Snelten accomplished the feat versus Ohio State in 2013.
Fiedler allowed just two hits and struck out six in the career-best performance. He even held preseason First Team All-Sun Belt selections Ryan Blanton, Justin Jones and Joey Roach to a combined 0-for-9 showing at the dish.
He faced 29 total batters in the outing and sent the final nine down in order to help secure the series-opening win against the Panthers.
Clearing the Fence
The Gophers had their most productive weekend at the plate, in terms of hitting home runs. In total Minnesota launched four homers off the bat of four different players.
Dan Motl drilled his first roundtripper of the season - a solo shot - in the third inning of the first game of the series on Friday. Just three innings later, Austin Athmann hit a no-doubter over the left-field wall to cap the scoring and give Fiedler all the run support he needed.
The final two home runs came from the left side of the plate in the last game of the series. Micah Coffey jumped on a fastball in the third inning and put it over the wall in right field to open the scoring ledger.
Highlighting the Gophers' biggest scoring outburst in an inning in the fifth, Eddie Estrada swung on the first pitch he saw and smacked a homer over the right-field fence that brought in three and proved to be the winning RBI in the non-conference clash.
Filling in at First
Sliding just a few feet over from his original spot at second base, Connor Schaefbauer played all three games at first base over the weekend. The senior did not commit an error and held a perfect fielding percentage to go along with 31 putouts in the three-game set.
Luke Pettersen and Riley Smith saw action at second to fill the shoes of Schaefbauer and also maintained a 1.000 fielding percentage in a combined 19 plays.
