Gophers Drop 5-2 Match to Indiana

Camila Vargas Gomez won her third straight match with Paula Rincon-Otero also picking up a win but the No. 71 University of Minnesota Gophers fell 5-2 at Indiana University this afternoon.
"The team battled and had chances but things did not come easy for us on the road," head coach Chuck Merzbacher said. "We were a little unfortunate here and there with some tough matches. We are now focused on senior weekend."
Indiana took the doubles point picking up wins at No. 2 and No. 1. Julia Courter and Caroline Ryba fell first and for just the fourth time this season. The duo is 13-4 together.
Mehvish Safdar and Caitlyn Merzbacher tied up doubles winning 6-4 at the No. 3 spot improving to 11-7 together. Paula Rincon-Otero and Annemarie Emme lost a hard fought 7-5 match.
Indiana took another point winning at number two with Courter retiring. She was up 3-0 at the time.
Vargas Gomez bumped her record to 15-12 with the big (6-1, 6-1) victory at the No. 6 spot to put the Maroon and Gold back into the match.
Indiana locked up the win with victories at No. 5 and No. 1 and followed taking a close win at the No. 4 spot. Jessika Mozia lost 6-0 in the first before winning the second set 6-3. She dropped the third set 6-3 to lose the match.
Rincon-Otero notched one more point in the Minnesota column in a back and forth battle at the No. 3 spot. She won the first set 6-4 but took a 6-2 loss in the second. She hung on to win 10-7 in the deciding set to keep her strong season going. She is now 17-10 with the most wins on the team.
The Gophers finish out the regular season next weekend at home for senior weekend. They host Maryland on Friday at 3 p.m. and end with Rutgers at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
