Gophers in Seventh After First Day at Thunderbird

Minnesota is in seventh place after the first day of the 2016 ASU Thunderbird Invitational, with a team score of 570. The Gophers shot an under par round as a team in the second, coming in with a 283.Riley Johnson leads the Gophers, with a 141 after two rounds. Johnson had the third best score overall in the first round, shooting a 4-under 67. Johnson picked up five birdies in the first round, two coming on par-5s, two on par-4s and one on a par-3 hole. He was tied for 18th at the completion of Saturday's second round.
Jon DuToit is one stoke behind Johnson, and tied for 22nd. DuToit had the best second round of any Gopher with a 69, which was four strokes better than his first round.
Justin Doeden had the most consistent scores of any Minnesota golfer in the first two rounds, with a 72 in the first round, and a 73 in the second. He eagled his final hole of the first round to drop his score to +1. Doeden's total score is a 145, which puts him in a tie for 36th.
Peter Jones and Rúnar Arnorsson both had better scores in the second round than they did in the early session, with Jones carding a 71 and Arnorsson coming in with a 70. Jones was tied for 43rd with a total score of 146, and Arnorsson was tied for 45th with a total score of 147.
Iowa State leads the team competition with a total score of 550. Jon Rahm of Arizona State leads all individuals with a two round score of 130.
The final round will tee off at 9:30 a.m. CT Sunday morning.
