College Baseball Hall of Fame Release

Junior Matt Fiedler was named to the 2016 John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award Watch List, it was announced by the National College Baseball Hall of Fame on Wednesday. The award, named after former two-way standout John Olerud, is given to the player who excels and both pitching and hitting at the collegiate baseball level.

Fiedler has been impressive in his third campaign with the Gophers. The Eagan, Minn. native has been the Friday night starter on the mound and No. 3 hitter in the lineup. Fiedler ranks 20th in the nation with a .409 batting average and leads the team with 54 hits.

The junior has amassed 10 doubles, three home runs and 21 RBI to pace the No. 5 offense in the country this season. He has slugged .553 and holds an on-base clip of .438 through 33 games played.

On the mound, Fiedler holds a 5-2 overall mark with a 3.38 ERA, which leads the starting staff. Through 53.1 innings pitched, he has held the opposition to hit just .261 while totaling 40 strikeouts.

Fiedler has had plenty of highlights on the diamond this season. At Georgia State, the flamethrower hurled a complete game shutout and allowed just two hits while striking out six. Fiedler faced only 29 batters and sent the final nine of the game down in order en route to becoming the first Gopher to throw a shutout since 2013.

The third-year standout was also named Big Ten Co-Player of the Week earlier this month after keying Minnesota to a pair of wins versus Iowa and one against Saint Mary's. Fiedler hit a scorching .529 with multi-hit performances in all four contests. He also maintained a slugging clip of .882, aided by a pair of homers, and tallied a team-best seven RBI.

Fiedler is no stranger to the award as he was tabbed to the watch list a season ago. He is joined by 23 other players from around the country and is one of only two players from the Big Ten (Carmen Benedetti, Michigan) to be up for the prestigious award.
