BARABOO, Wis.-- The University of Minnesota rowing team picked up four first place finishes, seven second place finishes and one third place finish in Wisconsin on Saturday. The Gophers took on Oklahoma, Iowa and Wisconsin during the Big Ten/Big 12 invite.
"We had a much better day than two weeks ago, and I expected it based on the way our team has been training during the interim," said head coach Wendy Davis. "Watching the 1N8 row through Iowa with 250 meters to go was a highlight, the 1V4, which went from losing by 30 seconds to winning by 5, is the biggest margin of improvement, and the other boats either won or gained in time in every event."
During the morning session, the Gophers tabbed second in every race against Oklahoma and Wisconsin. The Second Varsity Eight was narrowly edged by Wisconsin, finishing seven seconds behind while beating Oklahoma by 13 seconds. Finishing 10+ seconds behind Wisconsin, the First Novice Eight paced ahead of Oklahoma by 13 seconds. Minnesota’s Second Varsity Four eked out a second place finish against Oklahoma, finishing one second ahead of them while falling to Wisconsin.
