Skjei to Join USA Hockey for World Championship

MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) ââ'¬" Gopher Hockey alum and current New York Rangers defensman Brady Skjei has been added to the U.S. Men's National Team roster for the 2016 International Ice Hockey Federation Men's World Championship, May 6-22, in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia.
Skjei joins former Gophers teammate Hudson Fasching on the U.S. roster while Minnesota All-American alum Todd Richards will serve as an assistant coach.
A native of Lakeville, Minn., Skjei will make his third appearance for USA Hockey in IIHF competition. The defenseman previously helped the U.S. claim gold at the 2012 IIHF Men's Under-18 World Championship and was also a member of the 2014 U.S. National Junior Team.
With the Maroon & Gold, Skjei collected 27 points (eight goals, 19 assists) in 109 career games as a three-year letter winner. He earned All-Big Ten Honorable Mention and Academic All-Big Ten accolades in 2014 and 2015. The defensemen helped the Gophers to three-straight regular-season conference titles, three-straight NCAA tournament appearances (including a national championship game appearance in 2014) and the 2015 Big Ten tournament title.
Skjei signed an entry-level contract with the New York Rangers on April 1, 2015 ââ'¬" foregoing his senior season at Minnesota to join the organization that drafted him 28th overall in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. The defenseman skated in seven regular-season NHL games this year as well as five playoff games with two assists.
The 2016 IIHF Men's World Championships will include teams from 16 nations, split into two groups of eight. Teams will play a round-robin format within their group and the top four teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals. The U.S. will play its seven preliminary round games in St. Petersburg at Yubileiny Arena.
