Gophers Capture Four First Place Finishes in Saratoga Springs

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY---The University of Minnesota rowing team wrapped up a successful weekend of competition in Saratoga Springs, NY with four first place finishes and two second place finishes.
On Saturday, the Gophers swept the competition, finishing first in every race they participated in. The first Varsity Eight finished not only first in their heat, but with the fastest time out of the first Varsity Eight boats. Their 7:13.00 was good enough to beat nine other schools in the first race of the morning. The second Varsity Eight also finished ahead of nine schools with a 7:00.98 finish. The Varsity Four finished first in their heat and ahead of eight schools with a 7::44.77, just placing behind Syracuse who finished with a 7:44.02.
In the final day of competition, Minnesota's first Varsity Eight placed second in their heat with a time of 6:42.10. They finished behind Syracuse, but they were the second fastest first Varsity 8 boat, finishing ahead of eight other schools. The second Varsity Eight edged out the competition, finishing first with a 6:49.50, the fastest among second Varsity Eight Boats. The Varsity Four finished second behind Syracuse with a 7:44.22, the second fastest among Varsity Four boats.
"We are very pleased with the overall results," said Coach Wendy Davis on the weekend. "Sweeping Saturday's events and on Sunday coming in first in a squeaker in the second Varsity Eight event. Our second place finishes were solid as well. This was a weekend we can build upon in the coming weeks."
The Maroon and Gold head to Iowa next week to open their Big Ten schedule with a double dual meet with Wisconsin and Iowa.
