Gophers Win High Jump, 4x100m Relay

TEMPE, Ariz. - The University of Minnesota women's track & field team brought home titles in the 4x100-meter relay and high jump on day two of the Sun Angel Classic hosted by Arizona State.
Minnesota's 4x100-meter relay team of Kat Keller, Emma Spagnola, Kimberly Golding, and Emerald Egwim won the event in 45.69 seconds, and Heta Tuuri won the high jump.
Golding also took fourth in the 100-meter hurdles in 13.48 seconds, just 0.02 seconds off her program record time of 13.46, and Spagnola took eighth in the 400-meter hurdles in 59.97 seconds. Keller also ran a career-best in the 200-meter dash, placing 11th in 24.95 seconds.
Titania Markland finished fourth in the premiere section of the 400-meter dash, posting a time of 53.53 seconds in her first open 400m of the outdoor season. Markland holds Minnesota's outdoor program record at 52.86 seconds.
In the 800-meter run, Ally McSherry led the Gophers as the runner-up with a career-best 2:07.17 to move into sixth in Minnesota history.
Four Gophers placed in the top 12 of the open section of the 1,500-meter run led by runner-up Liz Berkholtz in 4:29.58. Taylor Mikkalson (4:31.38, fifth), Jamie Piepenburg (4:31.86, seventh) and Tess Wasowicz (4:35.96, 12th) all earned career-best times. In the premiere section, Haley Johnson (4:29.72) was 12th, and Kaila Urick (4:33.27) was 14th.
Tuuri won the high jump with an outdoor collegiate-best mark of 1.75m (5-08.75) to climb into seventh in Gophers' history, and Taylor Wiebke (1.70m, 5-7.00) also picked up an outdoor collegiate personal best for third place.
Nicolle Murphy was the runner-up in the javelin in her second appearance of the season, throwing 51.51m (169-00). Meanwhile, Kiley Sabin placed eighth in the premiere section of the shot put at 15.05m (49-04.50).
In the discus, Agnes Esser placed fifth in the premiere section at 53.39m (175-02), while three Gophers were in the top nine of the open section: Angie Guenther (48.41m, 158-10) was fourth, Kiley Sabin was sixth (career-best 47.87m, 157-01), and Ke-ke Burks was ninth (45.88m, 150-06).
Shanique Wright placed 10th in the triple jump with a leap of 12.15m (39-10.50).
Along with event titles in the high jump and 4x100-meter relay, Minnesota took home three event crowns on Friday. At the Mesa Classic, Markland won the 800-meter run in a career-best 2:08.52 and Mikkalson won the 3,000-meter steeple chase in a career-best 10:29.48. Guenther also won the open section of the hammer throw at the Sun Angel Classic at 58.87m (193-02).
Several Gophers also competed in the 1,500m run at the Ashton May Invitational hosted by UW-La Crosse on Saturday, led by Tamara Gorman (4:38.31) in third and Bailey Ness (4:41.64) in fifth.
